Anand Sharma, Naresh Gujral re-elected to Rajya Sabha

Senior Congress leader Anand Sharma and eight other members were recently elected or re-elected to the Rajya Sabha on Monday.

Mr. Sharma, Deputy Leader of the Congress party was re-elected from Himachal Pradesh and Naresh Gujral (SAD).

Others who took oath included Pratap Singh Bajwa; Congress leader from Punjab who was accommodated in Upper House by the party after Amrinder Singh was made head of party in the state.

Others who were elected from Punjab are : Shamsher Singh Dullo (Congress) and Shwatt Malik (BJP). From Assam, Ripun Bora and Ranee Narah (Cong) took the oath.

K Somaprasad (CPI-M) was elected to the Upper House from Kerala while Jharna Das Baidya (CPI[M]), was elected from Tripura.

Achievers nominated

On Friday, the six nominations to the Upper House for achievers in various spheres of public life was approved by the Rashtrapati Bhavan. The list included senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, former Test cricketer and BJP MP Navjyot Singh Sidhu, boxing legend Mary Kom, Economist and former member of the Sonia Gandhi-led National Advisory Council Narendra Jadhav, journalist Swapan Dasgupta and Malayalam actor Suresh Gopi.

As of now, there are seven vacancies among these 12, for which six names mentioned above have been announced, and one kept in abeyance.
