‘Let’s match China’s scale, speed’

June 09, 2014 03:40 am | Updated November 16, 2021 06:58 pm IST - New Delhi:

India needs to compete with China on “skills, scale and speed,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said at a book launch on Sunday, even as External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj completed talks with her Chinese counterpart Wang Yi.

Mr. Modi explained that India needed to build on its skills for the next generation as education was one area in which India could outstrip China. The country has to scale up its ambitions, he explained, saying that Indians should not aspire for bullet trains but for the much faster trains China has.

He said India needed to improve on “speed of governance,” particularly in places where bureaucratic responses were “slow and too structured.”
