The Left parties would step up their agitation against the increase in prices of all goods in general and petroleum products in particular, Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary Prakash Karat said.

He said that the coming Parliament session, the Leftists would strongly demand the rollback of fuel prices and the decision to deregulate the sector.

Mr. Karat said this while submitting a report on the just-concluded Central Committee meeting of the party at the State committee which began its session here on Saturday.

“We will escalate our agitation on the issue of price rise of all items including those of petroleum-products,” he said.

Senior party leaders Sitaram Yechury and S. Ramachandran Pillai were present, a party statement said.

Nationwide movement

The statement said that it was decided to raise in August, a nationwide movement on the issue of Food Security. Protests would also be organised on the issue of foreign direct investment in retail trade and the economic liberalisation policies of the Centre.

At the meeting, State secretary Biman Bose identified the areas that need to be worked upon to strengthen the party and uphold Communist values while correcting the lapses.

The meeting presided over by Benoy Konar will continue on Sunday, according to the statement
