President Pranab Mukherjee on Sunday condoled the death of Dr Verghese Kurien, the father of India’s ‘White Revolution’
Mr Mukherjee hailed Dr Kurien as one who ushered in White Revolution and had made enormous contributions to the fields of agriculture, rural development and dairying.
Dr Kurien, 90, who took India from being a milk-deficient country to the world’s largest milk producer, passed away early this morning in Gujarat due to age-related problems.
Vice-President M Hamid Ansari and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday condoled the death of Verghese Kurien, the founder of Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation.
In his condolence message, Mr Ansari said Dr Kurien is credited with being the architect of the largest diary development programme in the world — ‘Operation Flood’.
“He engineered the white revolution in India and made India the largest milk producer of the world. He is recognised as the man behind the success of the Amul brand,” the Vice-President said.
Condoling the sad demise of Dr Kurien, Mr Singh described him as an icon of India’s cooperative movement and the dairy industry.
In his condolence message to Dr Kurien’s wife, Molly Kurien, the Prime Minister said, Dr Kurien was an outstanding and innovative manager and an exceptional human being.
“His contribution to the welfare of the farmer and agricultural production and development of the country is immeasurable. Kurien was an icon of India’s cooperative movement and the dairy industry,” Mr Singh said.
In his long and illustrious career, Dr Kurien set up the Anand model of cooperative dairy development, engineered the ‘White Revolution’, and made India the largest milk producer in the world, the Prime Minister said.
“His greatest contribution was to give a position of pre-eminence to the farmer and his or her interests rather than those of middlemen,” Mr Singh said.
The Prime Minister said he personally had a rewarding association with Dr Kurien and benefited from his sagacity and vision.
“He has left behind a void that would be very difficult to fill. Kurien will always be widely respected and admired for his ability to inspire and bring out the best from ordinary people,” he said.

Dear Dr.Kurien,
RIP! I am totally shocked to hear about your demise. Though you are physically left from me (us), the feat and visionary leadership of yours changing the lives of million poor across the nation make you to live in my (our) heart as long as I (we) live. I (we) Salute you.
Dr. Kurien, RIP.
I have been honored to have known you for most of my 50 years. You were
brilliant, charismatic & tenacious in helping millions upon millions of
farmers all over India. And you did this at no financial gain to
yourself.
You are also the most fascinating speaker I have ever come across (bar
none) and every conversation I have had with you will remain imprinted
in my mind for the rest of my life.
No comment from Modi. what Happened?
It is a great loss for the nation. The legend that made the dream come
true for millions of farmers and his vision of Amul revolution has made
the lively hood for more than 10 million people. All country and its
people should adopt his vision in order to pay way for securing their
investment and lively hood as well as their old age retirement benefit.
What can we say about this great human being, he changed my life
completely given me scope of looking at the things which otherwise I
wouldn't. Like me I want the India should know about Kurien which should
be facilitated by the Government of India. Only one thing to say, why
would so many farmers visit his death bed?? what is the necessity for
them??
He served the nation well.
..One of the Makers of Modern India ! Outstanding Personality !
