The Supreme Court on Monday stayed Jammu and Kashmir High Court proceedings in the 24-year-old Kunan-Poshpora mass rape case.
A Bench led by Justice J. Chelameswar has also issued notice. The State government had earlier filed a special leave petition challenging the High Court direction regarding compensation to the victims before Supreme Court.
The alleged incident is of the intervening night of Feb. 23 and 24 in 1991 when soldiers of 4 Rajputana Rifles of 68 Brigade allegedly raped at least 40 women in Kunan and Poshpora, the twin villages of north Kashmir’s Kupwara.
The High Court had directed the State to pay compensation following the State Human Rights Commission’s recommendation to pay Rs. 2 lakh to the victims.
