Contending that lessons had been learnt from Commonwealth Games, External Affairs Minister S M Krishna today expressed confidence that the government would probe allegations of corruption.
At the same time, he said the success of Games had answered those who raised questions over India’s capacity to hold such mega events.
“This does not pertain to Foreign Affairs portfolio... Natural corollary will be that success of Games is one part of the story. Another part of the story is we have learnt lessons,” Krishna said during an interaction with journalists here.
“Whatever has been said, I think government will follow it up. That is government’s function,” he said when asked whether he felt that there should be a probe into allegations of corruption as they had marred India’s image.
Against the backdrop of slew of charges of corruption and delays, the government had been saying that these could be probed after the event gets over.
Krishna pointed out that there had been lots of doubts over whether India had the capacity to hold such Games.
“The Games have been a huge success.... I said it earlier also that India has inherent resilience which saw it through,” the External Affairs Minister said.
He described the closing ceremony of the 12-day Games as a “spectacular” show and congratulated all those involved, particularly the Indian sportspersons who brought laurels for the country.
Krishna said the Games had brought India to a new level which should be the backdrop for preparations to the 2012 London Olympics and 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
