January 03, 2013 11:15 pm | Updated 11:15 pm IST - IMPHAL:

Shanker Munim, kidnapped manager of Mangalam Plywood Factory, Kanglatongbi in Senapati district, was shot dead on Thursday morning as the company refused to pay a ransom for his release. The body was recovered from a spot near a fish farm at Waheng Khuman in Imphal West district.

Mr. Munim had been kidnapped in the past too. Now he was abducted by some armed persons on the night of January 1 while he was on way to the factory, 50 km away from Imphal city where he was staying.

It is believed that the management received a telephonic instruction to pay a big amount. But as the police intensified search operations, the kidnappers shot him dead.

The police are interrogating a surrendered insurgent who, along with another soldier of the India Reserve Battalion, owns the farm.
