Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade will be brought back to India and her dignity will be restored, External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid assured the Rajya Sabha Wednesday as members expressed outrage over her arrest and humiliation in the US.

“We will bring back the woman diplomat arrested in New York and restore her dignity. It is my responsibility,” Mr. Khurshid said in the Rajya Sabha after a brief discussion on the issue.

“We strongly condemn the treatment meted out to Indian diplomat in New York. India is not over-reacting to treatment to its diplomat by US. The nation must speak in one voice,” he said.

The issue was raised by Leader of Opposition Arun Jaitley who called for a review of India’s foreign policy. Commerce Minister Anand Sharma described it as a “national outrage” and said the government has taken a stern view of it.

Mr. Jaitley said it was time India insisted on being treated like equals. “If we conduct foreign policy in a manner that we’re taken for granted, then these incidents will be repeated.”

“We need to introspect where we stand on foreign policy,” he said, adding that the retaliatory measures India has taken needed to be continued.

Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati said the government should take up the case seriously as the diplomat was a Dalit. She accused New Delhi of waking up late.

Communist Party of India (Marxist)’s Sitaram Yechury said: “There have been cabinet members in the NDA and UPA governments who have been subjected to such (treatment).”

“This cannot be accepted by any sovereign nation... The attitude needs to change.”

Trinamool Congress member Derek O’Brien targetted the US: “We live in a global village but we don’t need a self-appointed global village headman. It is time now to codify all privileges India provides to US diplomats and the privileges our diplomats receive in the US.”

DMK’s Kanimozhi complained that time and again Indian leaders have been mistreated in the U.S.

On his part, Samajwadi Party leader Ramgopal Yadav said India seemed to suffer from an inferiority complex, which, he felt, “is very sad”.

The demand for discussing the issue was raised as soon as the upper house met. Chairman M. Hamid Ansari adjourned the house for 15 minutes and consulted all party leaders before the debate was taken up.

The question that begs asking is what Mr Kurshid or the Ministry or External Affairs propose to do, if at all such is their intention, to restore the dignity of the nation. Maybe it does not occur to the mandarins in New Delhi that the nation's pride was besmirched by the lowly act of fraud perpetrated by the Deputy Consul General.

We all must face consequence to our actions...diplomat or no diplomat...fraud is fraud and taking advantage of another human is wrong it does not matter about caste --- will India ever evolve from this way of life and thinking?. If U.S. officials went too far in handling the arrest process they will be accountable. She is living in the U.S. and should abide by U.S. laws OR go home where she can do as she pleases within that culture...

Compare Devyani case with what US did to protect Arthur Anderson of
Union Carbide of Bhopal fame and /Dow. Ten years later, India did not
learn its lesson and still our govt. gifted a plant to Dow for of all
things to research on poisonous gases. When Obama was elected, when
Indo-US Business Council met in Washington, its business men and
officials gave a list of items on which govt. of India to decide before
their president visited India. They think India is a colony of theirs!!

When you factor in food, rent, and fringe benefits I'm sure the salary
was far above the minimum required and what was stipulated on the forms.
How many menial laborers pocket $3/hour after food and rent costs?

In a country when a politician is a rapist, crook, cheat or corrupt we
ignore it and praise them with meetings and garlands. Sure there is no
harm in bringing back a consular officer ( Not senior diplomat as claimed)
involved in Visa fraud with dignity!!!

can anyone ask Mr Khurshid how he can restore the dignity of Ms Devyani,
is it restorable? Why these people can not prevent these types of
ridiculous practices? If we are not respecting our people then how
others will?

There is no special cell in US jails either for diplomats or special class people. When anyone commits a crime, she/he has to undergo the process. The discrimination factor that she is a Dalit is a smoke screen, which may work in India. In US there may be prejudices and nepotism in many level and Dalit and non Dalit issue is not one of them. The non-diplomatic personnel in all the embassies are treated like dirt and Indian embassy officials over do that issue is dominant. No over time pay, no minimum wages(as prescribed by law in US),and no medical insurance for the personnel. They are treated like virtual slaves. US should stand the ground and should not flex by the perception of Dalit policy.

Why was no reaction when ex president APJ Abdul Kalam was frisked?
If Devyani Khobragade can't afford a nanny for the minimum salary as per
US law, then she should help herself cleaning her stuff. I think India
is overreacting on a wrong case. India's assuming so called upper class
should feel the heat of equality. This is just another case of wealthy
Indians abusing less privileged

What a bunch of hypocrites the elected politicians are.
It is right that India and for that matter, the rest of the world, to
assert and ensure equanimity of nations and people in this so-called
globalized world is a given.
Shout a vociferous No to hegemony. The West and US, must be made to
realize without any doubt and exception that they are on level base
with the rest of the world community. They have to get off their
"Imperialistic and Colonialist" high horse!
And as for Indians in general be rid of casteism in mind body and
It is a shameful vestige and to continue practising it diminishes the
worth, value and dignity of the modern Indian honed from the amalgam
of the various histories, cultures, and civilizations that India is.

Interesting.Dalit diplomat. If the maid was a Dalit, then will Mayavati
accept a dalit misbehaving with another dalit and shout or just keep
quiet. Why nobody talks about the maid now, after all she was cheated by
the diplomat, according to US police. Will the Govt punish the Diplomat
for this act .

When the country is talking in one voice against the injustice caused to
an Indian, why is BSP leader bringing in the caste shadow here? This is
where we get divided and the problem starts.
