Key accused in the July 9 Guwahati molestation case Amarjyoti Kalita was arrested in Varanasi on Monday.

Senior Superintendent of Police, Guwahati, A.P. Tewari, told The Hindu Kalita was arrested by an Assam police team with the help of the Varanasi police.

“We are sending another team to Varanasi with relevant papers to bring him back after completing the formalities for transit remand from court. He is likely to be brought back to Guwahati by Wednesday evening or Thursday morning,” Mr. Tewari said.

The police arrested 12 persons earlier.

The Assam police had announced a cash award of Rs. 1 lakh to anyone giving information on Kalita. Footage of the molestation incident showed Kalita trying to prevent police from taking away the victim, a 20-year-old girl.

Kalita was arrested from a hotel in Varanasi. IG (Law and Order) B.P. Singh told reporters that Kalita was arrested from the Lanka police station area and being interrogated.
