Key accused in the July 9 Guwahati molestation case Amarjyoti Kalita was arrested in Varanasi on Monday.

Senior Superintendent of Police, Guwahati, A.P. Tewari, told The Hindu Kalita was arrested by an Assam police team with the help of the Varanasi police.

“We are sending another team to Varanasi with relevant papers to bring him back after completing the formalities for transit remand from court. He is likely to be brought back to Guwahati by Wednesday evening or Thursday morning,” Mr. Tewari said.

The police arrested 12 persons earlier.

The Assam police had announced a cash award of Rs. 1 lakh to anyone giving information on Kalita. Footage of the molestation incident showed Kalita trying to prevent police from taking away the victim, a 20-year-old girl.

Atiq Khan reports from Lucknow:

Kalita was arrested from a hotel in Varanasi. IG (Law and Order) B.P. Singh told reporters that Kalita was arrested from the Lanka police station area and being interrogated.

All the accused of this heinous crime must be given the harshest of
punishment as prescribed by the law of the land. The court must play a
significant role here as the punishment meted out to these culprits
would be a deterrent for others so that nobody in future would think
of indulging in a crime against women in such a casual manner as these
people were doing on the night of July 9 in Guwahati. One must not
forget the role of the TV reporter who actively participated in the
crime. Media must not jump to his defense and judge the seriousness of
his crime objectively.

If he is a govt. employee, has he been suspended? Why is media not taking up this issue. And NCW should note that monetary compensation or govt. job is no compensation; the real compensation is quick and exemplary punishment to Kalita.
