Youth’s murder triggers tension in Kasaragod

Tension prevails in Kasaragod town and nearby area following murder of a youth at Choori locality near here as the day-long hartal sponsored by the United Democratic Front (UDF) in the Madhur panchayat limits crippled normal life even in the municipal area limits.

The 25-year old youth Refad sustained serious injuries as three unidentified persons travelling in a three-wheeler attacked him with deadly weapons at Battapara as he was walking along the road around 09.00 PM on Sunday, police here said.

The youth, who received multiple wounds all over his body was rushed to a private hospital in Mangalore where he died around 11.00 PM last night.

Meanwhile, tension prevails in the municipal area limits of the town, which witnessed a hartal like situation with the entire vehicles, including two wheelers and private and State Road Transport buses keeping off the roads.

Reports reaching here said that vehicles passing through the National Highway are being blocked by the hartal supporters hitting the swift movement of Sabarimala bound pilgrims from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh and other states.

The entire shops and business hours remained shutdown in the town during the day.

However, buses bound for Kasaragod and destinations beyond, are suspending their services mid way crippling the passenger mobility on a day when Opposition leader Oommen Chandy is scheduled to commence his “Kerala Vimochana Yatra” from nearby Uppala town later this evening.

No arrests have been made in connection with the murder of the youth as police is keeping close vigil on the perpetrators of violence, they said.

The fatal attack last night is said to be sequel of isolated attacks by rival group during the last few days, they added.
