Youth Congress activists lathicharged

December 03, 2011 08:29 pm | Updated November 17, 2021 12:06 am IST - KARINKULAM CHAPPATHU:

The police resorted to a lathicharge when a march taken out by Youth Congress activists to the Mullaperiyar dam on Friday turned violent.

Though the police had been informed about the march, there were only a few police personnel posted there. A civil police officer was injured in the scuffle when the police attempted to block the march.

The march was taken out in protest against the stance of the Tamil Nadu government opposing the construction of a new dam in place of the Mullaperiyar dam and to declare solidarity with the agitation being waged by the Mullaperiyar Agitation Council demanding decommissioning of the dam.

The Youth Congress activists reached the spot by breaking the police cordon and hoisted a flag there.

The police said no one was injured in the lathicharge. The Kumily police have registered a case.
