Works under Kuttanad Package to be taken up

July 15, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:57 am IST - ALAPPUZHA:

Amidst allegations of incompetent official handling of the Kuttanad Package, the government has set new goals to achieve some of the aims of the scheme. A meeting convened by the government in Thiruvananthapuram earlier this week had discussed several issues related to the implementation of certain projects which were part of the package. Plans are being chalked out to take up some new works and to complete some others which had been abandoned midway.

The Chief Secretary has been asked to prepare a roadmap to execute works related to the package.

Accordingly, works on modernisation of the Thanneermukkam bund are to be completed by December this year. The works on Thottapally spillway, aimed at improving its efficacy, will be over by January next year.

Measures will be taken to remove encroachments on AC canal. Work on the canal stretch from Changanaserry to Onnamkara has been completed. The next phase of the work will be taken up from Onnamkara to Nedumudi and from there to Pallathuruthy. The government has asked the Alappuzha District Collector to have a survey done on the encroachments on the canal.

Cleaning Vembanad lake

The Environment Department has been entrusted with the task of preparing a scheme for cleaning up of Vembanad lake. Special attention would be paid on works to remove water hyacinth from the lake. Local self-governments would be asked to execute the work under a decentralised pattern.
