Work on the first of the blocks for housing IT and ITES companies at SmartCity Kochi will begin in April, this year, Baju George, managing director of the project said here on Monday.

He was speaking to reporters after a meeting with Labour Minister Shibu Baby John.

He said the pavilion at the project site would be ready soon. The site office and related facilities needed for organising civil construction would be in this pavilion. Its work would require four weeks more than the time within which it was initially expected to be completed.

He said the work on the pavilion was being undertaken by the company that was in charge of Tecom’s Dubai project and it had to acclimatise itself with the situations here. This was the reason for the delay in completing the work on the pavilion.

He said Tecom, the Dubai-based promoters of SmartCity Kochi, was confident of completing the whole project within five-and-a-half years. The promoters are legally bound to create 88 lakh sq.ft. of built-up space in SmartCity and 90,000 jobs when the project is complete.
