The District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) has stared the work on a botanical garden in Munnar. The Rs.4.5-crore project will have plants with their names and resting places for visitors in the natural setting, says K.V. Francis, DTPC secretary.

The DTPC will focus on diversification and extension of facilities in the less known tourism spots in the district so as to reduce the pressure on the main tourist destinations of Munnar and Thekkady.

The stress will be on safety measures and infrastructure development in less known tourist spots.

Lifeguards have been deployed at the reservoirs under the DTPC, he said.

Work on the ‘Take A Break’ (roadside resting place and eatery) at Munnar, Peerumade Amnesty Centre, and a restaurant, and staying place on the Kochi-Munnar route has been completed. These centres will be inaugurated by Tourism Minister A.P. Anilkumar on March 3, Mr. Francis said.

Last year, the focus was on providing budget accommodation, construction of resting places and eateries, he said adding that the DTPC had taken over Motel Aram owned by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation at Valara.
