The Kerala State Women’s Commission will look into the complaints of cyberbullying of K.K. Rema, the wife of slain RMP leader T.P. Chandrasekharan.

Commission chairperson M.C. Josephine said the panel had been functioning without any political bias since assuming office. It had intervened when a complaint of abuse of a woman officer came up against CPI(M) MLA C.K. Hareendran, she said.

Incidentally, several social and women activists had come out against the cyberattack on Ms. Rema, reportedly by CPI(M) sympathisers.

Cyberbullying of women by followers of political parties was only a part of the real issue.

Societal awakening

Several women were being targeted and abused in social media, against which there should be a societal awakening, she said.

Jagrata samitis, local-level committees for protecting women against exploitation and guarding their rights, would be reconstituted and activated soon. Of late, the committees had become inert. The committees would be reactivated by April, said Ms. Josephine after a mega adalat, which concluded here on Tuesday.

Ms. Josephine said the panel would come out with a report on one year of its functioning.

It would hold awareness programmes in all villages in Wayanad district. The panel would reach out to all girl students in colleges and create awareness of their rights, she said.

The northern regional office of the commission would come up in Kozhikode soon. Funds had been earmarked for the office. In the next phase, another office would be set up in Kochi for catering to the central region of the State.
