The Kerala Women’s Commission (KWC) on Monday informed Speaker P. Sivaramakrishnan that it had registered a case against Kerala Congress (George) legislator P.C. George. It sought his permission to record the statement of the MLA from Poonjar.
On Sunday, the KWC had taken strong exception to certain libellous comments it attributed to Mr. George. The Commission had also issued a stern warning, cautioning the MLA that his attempts to “intimidate” the judicial body would be met with legal action.
The KWC had earlier opened an inquiry against Mr. George on the charge of “shaming” the woman actor who was abducted and sexually assaulted in Kochi in February. The Commission’s case against the MLA was that he had made certain character statements against the actor, which could be considered derogatory.
M.C. Josephine, KWC chairperson, had taken the stance that the constitutional body could not remain a mute witness when people in public office insulted womanhood.
Mr. George is also facing two criminal inquiries — one for allegedly brandishing a firearm at agitating estate workers on a plantation in his Assembly constituency in Poonjar and the other for allegedly assaulting a waiter attached to the Legislative Assembly hostel canteen.
