Withdrawal petrol price hike: Krishna Iyer

May 25, 2012 01:46 pm | Updated November 16, 2021 11:48 pm IST - Kochi:

Former Supreme Court judge V.R. Krishna Iyer on Thursday urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to roll back the hike in petrol price.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, Mr. Krishna Iyer said the hike was too high to be ‘tolerated.' It would only increase the cost of travel. He asked the Prime Minister to think of creative ways of reducing consumption of petrol and energy and not to punish the common man for the government's ‘the bankruptcy of ideas.'

He warned that the people would put Dr. Singh in his proper place for the ‘reckless' hike in fuel prices in the next Lok Sabha elections if he did not withdraw the hike. He said the increase had affected the fundamental rights of the citizen.
