Window to an endearing mascot

For Malayalis, Ammu is a common name for girls in Kerala. And it could be one reason the Games mascot, The Great Indian Hornbill, for the 35{+t}{+h}edition of the National Games was named Ammu .

Yet, there are a number of important facts most people are unaware about the bird even as efforts are on to ensure its protection. Nammude Vezhambalukal (Our Hornbills), a book brought out by the State Institute of Languages in connection with the National Games may serve that purpose. Written by Muhammed Jafer Palot, a zoologist, the book is a simple but comprehensive guide on the bird, its life, feeding and breeding.
