B.Ed. prospectus riddled with errors

A B.Ed. aspirant wishing to join a training college affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University in the new academic year may miss the bus, thanks to the error-filled prospectus for admission.

The prospectus for admission (published on the official website www.mgu.ac.in) in various training colleges of the varsity for 2015-16 has listed B.Ed. programmes in Tamil and Urdu at a time when none of the institutions under it are offering the courses.

The varsity authorities seem to have done a ‘cut-and-paste’ job of the prospectus published last year by the LBS Centre for Science and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram, which had conducted the State-level online registration and allotment under the single window admission for B.Ed. courses. Interestingly, Mahatma Gandhi University authorities failed to delete the courses not in offer under its institutions while copying the details published last year in the prospectus for 2015-16.

LBS Centre has no role in this year’s admission process as the Higher Education Department directed the Registrars of universities concerned to prepare the prospectus and publish the notification for admission to the two-year B.Ed. and M.Ed. courses for 2015-16 as per the revised regulations of the National Council for Teacher Education.

Curiously, the university prospectus mentioned that candidates applying under the sports quota should forward their original applications to the Director, LBS Centre. Students have to submit the application forms in institutions of their choice affiliated to the varsity for admission this year as per the revised rules.

A candidate searching for the affiliated B.Ed. colleges and courses on offer will remain clueless as the prospectus lacks such details. There is also no clarity on whether the fee proposed in the prospectus for government, aided and self-financing colleges is for a semester or on a yearly basis. The prospectus also failed to mention where the students should remit the money. Moreover, the academic eligibility norms in the prospectus are not in tune with the existing grading system for undergraduate programmes offered by the university.
