March 25, 2014 01:25 am | Updated May 19, 2016 11:11 am IST - KOTTAYAM:

Kerala Congress(M) chairman and Finance Minister K. M. Mani has revealed that his party was on the verge of leaving the United Democratic Front (UDF) over the Idukki seat issue.

“The issue had reached a stage where we were thinking of leaving the front, but we decided to make the ultimate sacrifice of giving it up for the sake of the unity of the coalition,” Mr. Mani told media persons here on Monday.

Certain etiquette

“Parties have to follow certain etiquette while being in a coalition and the KC(M) has not breached the Lakshman Rekha in this regard. However, this should not be viewed as surrender or defeat. It was a sacrifice on the part of the party,” he said.

According to Mr. Mani, he and P.JJoseph had held discussions with the Congress. The Central leaders had explained the constraints of the Congress with regard to the Idukki seat.

He also clarified that the KC(M) had not traded any thing in place of the seat.
