Wayside vendors in Kottayam town to be evicted

May 12, 2011 08:12 pm | Updated 08:12 pm IST - KOTTAYAM:

In the backdrop of increasing traffic congestions, the Kottayam Municipality on Thursday decided to evict wayside vendors. The support of the Police and the Public Works Departments will be requested to carry forward the drive against encroachments on public property.

The municipal council passed the decision unanimously.

A session of the council that will be convened soon will discuss the issue of relocation of vendors.

Instances of traffic snarl-ups, discomfort to pedestrians and the safety threat faced by females during late hours are the prime reasons for arriving at the decision to evict unlicensed makeshift stalls and footpath hawkers.
