Wayanad to be plastic free from Oct. 2

August 18, 2016 02:33 am | Updated 02:33 am IST - KALPETTA:

The Wayanad district administration has decided to ban the use and supply of plastic products such as carry bags, disposable plates, thermocol disposable plates, and plastic disposable tumblers in the district from October 2.

The ban order was issued by District Collector Kesavendrakumar on Monday invoking Section 133 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973, which empowers the district magistrate to prohibit or regulate any trade or occupation or keeping of any goods or merchandise if it is injurious to the health and physical comfort of the community.

A District Development Committee meeting on July 30 resolved that action should be taken to make the district plastic free from October 2. It was resolved to take action for prohibiting the use of plastic carry bags, thermocol plates, and plastic disposable glasses in the district. “As there is no plastic carry bag, plate or glass manufacturing unit functioning in Wayanad and the whole stock is sourced from outside the district, the use of these items does not create any job opportunities for the people of Wayanad,” Mr. Kesavendrakumar said.
