There is a wave of anger against the Congress and the UPA government which is going to sweep them out of power, CPI(M) general secretary, Prakash Karat, has said.

Mr Karat was addressing an election campaign meeting of the LDF candidate, Peelipose Thomas, at the private bus stand here on Sunday.

He said the people are going to punish the Congress party for its anti-people policies and the unabated price rise. The decontrol of price of petroleum products was meant to serve corporate interests, he said.

The petrol price was increased 26 times whereas the increase in the price of diesel has become a monthly affair, he said. Mr Karat alleged that failure to create employment opportunities, crisis in the agriculture sector leading to a massive farmer suicides, and unprecedented corruption were all the hallmarks of the UPA government.

The Rs 1.76 lakh crore 2G spectrum scam, Rs 1.86 lakh crore coal block allocation scandal, and the gas pricing scandal that had cost Rs 1 lakh crore to the public exchequer was the balance sheet of the UPA rule, he alleged.

Mr Karat said that implementation of the ‘Gujarat-model’ across the country was a Sangh Parivar-BJP agenda.

The BJP’s prime ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi, has got the unanimous support of all big business houses and corporates in India who hope to get more concessions under a Modi government at the Centre, he alleged.

The Congress that has been fighting hard for survival would never be able to stop the BJP from coming to power at the Centre. Mr Karat said the LDF securing maximum number of Lok Sabha seats in Kerala was a dire necessity to form a secular, democratic third alternative to the Congress and the BJP in the post-election scenario.

He called upon the people to elect Peelipose Thomas from Pathanamthitta with a strong majority.

K.N.Balagopal, Rajya Sabha MP, translated the English speech of Mr. Karat into Malayalam.
