Health Minister K. K. Shylaja along with Mayor V.K.Prasanth greet the best award winning doctors of 2016 at the Doctors Day celebrations organised by the IMA in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday.

Health Minister K.K. Shyalaja has said that the government and the Corporation could successfully manage waste only with people’s cooperation.

Inaugurating the Doctors’ Day celebrations and presenting awards to the best doctors of 2016 here on Saturday, Ms. Shylaja said the people’s opposition to the setting up of waste management plants left the municipal corporation and health authorities with few options. “For the proper management of waste, the public has to cooperate,” she said. The public has little concern about waste management. Although arrangements have been made for waste segregation and disposal, not everyone was comfortable with all that.

There must be a total change in the attitude of the people for a healthy environment free from diseases.

The rapid spread and increase in the number of fatal diseases due to climate change and other factors have posed a major challenge for the governments in power.

Steps are on to control mosquitoes and this has helped in checking the death rate though fever patients have gone up, she added.

Mayor V.K. Prasanth pointed out that 450 tons of waste is generated each day in the capital city and regretted the people’s opposition to the setting up of proper waste processing plants.

Awards for the best doctors of 2016 were presented to Dr. Jayakumar, Dr. P.A. Lalitha, Dr. P.A Muhammed Kunju, Dr. P.N Suresh Kumar, Dr. Gujral and Dr. C.K Augustin.
