War of words after IUML-CPI(M) clash at Tanur

April 21, 2016 12:00 am | Updated October 18, 2016 02:12 pm IST - MALAPPURAM:

Normalcy was restored in Tanur after a clash between workers of the CPI(M) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) Tuesday evening. However, tension prevailed in the area on Wednesday with a strong police posse keeping vigil at the sensitive coast.

Candidates of the United Democratic Front (UDF) and Left Democratic Front (LDF) levelled charges of deliberate and calculated attack against each other.

V. Abdurahiman, the LDF Independent candidate, who suffered minor injuries in the clash, said that IUML wokers had unleashed a deliberate attack on him and his followers during electioneering on Tuesday.

Abdurahman Randathani, the UDF candidate, said that LDF activists had made a deliberate attempt to spoil a function in which Chief Minister Oommen Chandy attended in Tanur Tuesday evening.

Mr. Randathani and K. Kutty Ahamed Kutty, former MLA of Tanur, alleged that had the police acted on their complaints the clash could have been avoided.

Over a dozen men belonging to both sides, including the LDF candidate, were injured in the clashes. However, none suffered any serious injuries. The house of M.P. Ashraf, former president of erstwhile Tanur panchayat, came under attack from a mob.

All-party meeting

An all-party meeting has been convened in Tanur on Thursday. The police registered cases on the basis of complaints by both sides. CPI(M) leaders Paloli Mohammed Kutty, A. Vijayaraghavan, and T.K. Hamza visited the area along with party district secretary P.P. Vasudevan on Wednesday. Mr. Randathani and Mr. Kutty Ahamed Kutty too visited the area.
