Wage for housewife an affront to womanhood: court

February 22, 2013 02:38 am | Updated 02:38 am IST - KOCHI:

A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court has held that fixing a price tag for the work of mother, wife, sister, and daughter at home is an affront to motherhood and womanhood.

The Bench of Chief Justice Manjula Chellur and Justice K. Vinod Chandran made the observation while dismissing a writ petition filed by the Women’s Voice, Sulthan Bathery-based organisation for women, seeking a directive to provide minimum wages for housewives.

The court observed that the work of mothers or housewives was immeasurable. These days, women were engaged in all kinds of work. The court further observed that the significance of women in societal well-being and individual uplift could not be discounted. Many women had given up lucrative professions to take care of their family and many were capable of maintaining a well-knit family.

The petitioner sought to evaluate the work rendered by women at home and provide minimum wages for such work.
