VS, Pannian seek Tharoor’s resignation

January 07, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 09:19 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan and CPI State secretary Pannian Ravindran have demanded Congress MP Shashi Tharoor’s resignation in the light of Delhi Police’s finding that his wife Sunanda’s death was a case of murder.

In separate statements here on Tuesday, Mr. Achuthanandan and Mr. Ravindran said Dr. Tharoor should face a free and fair investigation into the case and that this would be possible only if he resigned as an MP. Under the Indian Penal Code, the police should have registered a case against Dr. Tharoor immediately after his wife’s death under suspicious circumstances, they pointed out.

Mr. Achuthanandan said all the evidence in the case were against Dr. Tharoor. Under the law, the police should register a case against the spouse if the wife dies within seven years of marriage. As such, the police should have registered a case against Dr. Tharoor. Since the Delhi Police have now made it clear that they would interrogate Dr. Tharoor, his continuation as MP is legally and morally unethical.

BJP demand

BJP State president V. Muraleedharan said here on Tuesday that Dr. Tharoor should resign as MP. He said the Congress should apologise to the people for fielding him as its candidate from Thiruvananthapuram and pave way for mid-term election from the constituency.

Doubts had lingered, but the Congress had sought to whitewash Dr. Tharoor, Mr. Muraleedharan said.
