The district meeting of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] held in the run-up to the 21st party Congress has elected V.N. Vasavan, former MLA and present district secretary of CITU, as the new district secretary.

According to party sources, he was elected unanimously. Mr. Vasavan’s election comes in the wake of the stepping down of K.J. Thomas, who has completed his third term as district secretary.

The meeting elected a 35-member district committee, in which two are new faces. Meanwhile, P.K. Biju, MP, who is also a member of the State committee, has been dropped from the district committee as he wants to focus more on Palakkad.

The 35-member district committee had a vacancy created by the death of V.K. Gopinathan. The new faces in the district committee are Vaikom area committee secretary K.K. Ganesan and Vazhoor area committee secretary Girish S. Nair.
