Veteran journalist and old-time socialist leader Thayath Raghavan died here on Wednesday. He was 88.

He died in a private hospital here where he had been admitted a few days ago with age-related ailments. The cremation will take place at Payyambalam here on Thursday.

Thayath Raghavan, who had been drawn into politics during the freedom movement, later joined the socialist fold led by Jayaprash Narayanan and Ram Manohar Lohya. He had contested and lost the Assembly election in the Koothuparamba constituency in 1970. Later, he had been associated with the Thrissur-based Express newspaper for many years and served as district president and secretary of the Kerala Union of Working Journalists. He had also been actively involved in the Library movement and the trade union movement in the region. He had been awarded the P. Kunhiraman Memorial for his contributions to the Library Movement.

He is survived by his wife and three sons.
