The Pooram festival at the Vayillakunnil Bhagavathy temple and the Vayillakunnnil Appan temple at Kadampazhipuram in Ottapalam taluk on Saturday attracted large number of devotees from the district and outside.
The youngest of the legendary Parayipetta Panthirukulam is the deity of the Vayillakunnil Appan temple. According to the legend, Vayillakunnil Appan has no mouth, a cause of agony to the parents. The mother could not feed her child. So, his father, Vararuchi, one of the nine scholars of the royal Assembly of Emperor Vikramaditya, consecrated him for the people to worship. He is worshipped as Lord Shiva there.
There were four Velas featuring caparisoned elephants, traditional percussion orchestra and folk arts for the Pooram. In the evening, cultural programmes were also held as part of the festival.
