The University of Calicut launched its year-long golden jubilee celebrations on Saturday. Inaugurating the celebrations, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that his government was working towards turning the universities in the State into centres of excellence.

The Chief Minister said the government’s policy envisaged enhancement of universities and some important institutions in the State to global standards. “Those institutions that submit detailed project reports will be given financial aid through the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB),” he said.

Academic master plan

Welcoming the university’s decision to prepare an academic master plan as part of the golden jubilee celebrations, Mr. Vijayan said that academic excellence could not be replaced by excellence in any other sector. The Chief Minister said many undesirable incidents were being reported from the higher education sector in the country. “Deliberate attempts are being made to curtail democratic freedom and rights,” he said.

Minister for Education C. Ravindranath presided over the function. P.K. Kunhalikutty, MP, delivered the keynote address. Pro Vice Chancellor P. Mohan presented the golden jubilee projects of the university.
