Communist Party of India (CPI) State unit secretary Pannian Ravindran has said that erosion of values and ethics in the political and media sectors will endanger democracy in the country.
He was inaugurating the first death anniversary meeting of journalist Joy Sasthampadikkal here on Friday.
Mr. Ravindran said that like other sectors, the media too was facing erosion of values. “This is very dangerous in a democracy where the press has a crucial role of correcting the mistakes of the legislature and the executive. The media has a key role in a democracy like India. So, the deterioration of standards and ethics in the media is a threat to the very democratic foundation of the country,” he said.
The CPI State unit secretary said the desire for luxury was a fallout of the globalisation and liberalisation policies based on consumerism. If political and social activists did not control this urge, it would endanger clean politics and social life in the country.
Mr. Ravindran said Joy Sasthampadikkal followed journalistic ethics and truthfulness in reporting incidents and events.
