The Health Department has initiated stringent actions to check the spread of typhoid at Kondotty. All marriage and related parties in Kondotty municipal limits will be monitored by the health authorities for a few weeks.
A massive typhoid outbreak following a mega marriage party held on March 27 at Kunnathuparamba near Kondotty had ignited angst and fear among the people and authorities.
“We are closely monitoring and taking all preventive measures. No water supply will be allowed in marriage parties without the sanction of the Health Department,” said K. Shibulal, District Surveillance Officer who is in charge of public health.
Dr. Shibulal said all water sources relied on by the people of Kondotty were being checked and chlorinated. The municipal authorities have been instructed to maintain a close check along with the health authorities on the water being supplied at Kondotty and its peripheries.
Rigorous checks are being conducted in the region to find the presence of coliform bacteria in water. “We conduct the checks on a daily basis. We bleach the water and ensure that it is bacteria-free by using a chloroscope,” said District Medical Officer V. Ummer Farook.
Health officials have suggested medicines like Cotrimoxazole, Chloramphenicol and injectable Ceftriaxone after tests proved that the outbreak was caused by Salmonella paratyphi-A bacteria. In the region, this paratyphoid bacterium, with less incubation period, was found resistant to popular antibiotics like Azithromycin and Ciprofloxacin.
A medical team from Community Medicine Department of Government Medical College, Kozhikode, will conduct a study in the region on Monday.
