Two women die of A(H1N1) flu in Kerala

Two women have died of A(H1N1) flu in Kerala where about 2,000 persons are seeking treatment in Government hospitals for treatment of various types of viral fever.

A woman each from Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram succumbed to the H1N1 virus since Monday night and the State now had 19 confirmed cases, health department sources said Tuesday.

While official figures said 1,172 patients had come to Government hospitals for treatment of various types of viral fever, media reports said the total number of cases could be anything between 3,000 to 4,000.

Health officials confirmed 20 cases of dengue, six rat fever and one chikungunya.

As many as 19 confirmed cases of virus H1N1 were also reported, of which 17 are from Thiruvananthapuram and one from Kollam and Malappuram districts, a Health Department release said.

Thiruvanathapuram district was one of the worst hit by fever with as many as 1,080 patients reporting on Tuesday for treatment.

Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy has instructed district medical authorities to ensure that hospitals had sufficient doctors, paramedics and medicines to tackle the situation.

Preventive measures have been stepped up in the State capital where mobile clinics have been pressed into service and special attention was being given to coastal and interior areas.
