The woman Madhavi was living alone at her house at Thottukad. Her body was found charred beyond recognition inside her home on February 13. Police earlier thought it was a case of suicide by pouring kerosene over the body and setting ablaze using match box. No circumstantial evidence related to murder was found on the premises.

But it was only later that relatives found her earrings missing. Based on a suspicion, police began to keep a watch on all jewellery shops in the region.
