Two killed in road accident

Two persons were killed and three others injured when the car they were travelling in was hit by a lorry on the National Highway at Thana Junction in the town in the early hours of Tuesday.

The deceased have been identified as J. Afsal (28) from Edakkad here, who was driving the car, and Muhammad Subair Haji (53) from Irikkur. The injured have been identified as M.K. Assainar (48), M.K. Saibunnisa (35) and her son Al Ameen (11). All the passengers in the car were relatives who were returning from Kochi. The injured have been admitted to private hospitals here.

According to the police, the lorry laden with fish on its way from Mangalore to Kozhikode collided with the car coming from the opposite side at around 2 a.m. While Afsal died on the spot, Haji succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

The front portion of the car was completely mangled in the collision. It took nearly half-an-hour for the police and Fire and Rescue Services personnel assisted by local people to extricate the passengers from the car.
