Two persons were killed after the car they were travelling in collided with a steel-laden lorry at Kalavoor, near here, on Wednesday.

The incident occurred at the Block Junction by around 6.30 a.m. on National Highway-66. The deceased have been identified as Preethi Reny (44) of Pongumoodu, Thiruvananthapuram, and Vinod (33) of Sreekaryam, Thiruvananthapuram. A third passenger, Usha (58), was admitted to a private hospital in Cherthala with injuries.

According to eye-witnesses, the car somersaulted four times after hitting the Alappuzha-bound lorry before coming to a halt.

Fire-force personnel had to cut through the mangled remains of the car to recover the passengers.

The trio was headed for Kodungallur from Thiruvananthapuram in connection with treatment for Preethi, whose husband, Reny S. Nair, is employed in Muscat. Vinod, who is survived by his wife and son, was a driver attached to the Thiruvananthapuram depot of the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation.

The bodies of the deceased were handed over to their relatives after post-mortem at the Government T.D. Medical College at Alappuzha, the police said.
