Two sisters, aged seven and 13, were killed when a car carrying them plunged into river Pampa at Neerettupuram near Thiruvalla on Sunday.

The incident occurred when the two girls were taken by their father for a ride in their newly bought car around 8.20 a.m. David, father of the children, who drove the car, escaped..

Though Mr. David, a teacher at TMT High School, Thalavady near Edathua, tried hard to rescue his children, the heavy undercurrents in the flooded river had pulled down the vehicle, leaving the children trapped inside.

Fire and Rescue Force team reached the spot immediately. Rescue operations were going on with the help of locals.

Another rescue team from Alappuzha also reached the spot with equipments for under-water search operation from Alappuzha in the next two hours.

Bodies of the two girls, Darshana Maria David (13) and Donna Maria David (7), were recovered from the car which was fished out of thedeep waters by the Fire Force teams after a three-hour long search operation.

Meanwhile, the father of the two missing children had consumed poison in a desperate mood and was hospitalised in a critical condition, later, police said.

Darshana was studying in eighth standard at TMT High School, Thalavady and Donna in second standard at St George LP School, Muttar. Their mother, Mini David, is a teacher at St. George Lower Primary School at Muttar.
