The government issued a tsunami warning following an earthquake in Sumatra (Indonesia) on Sunday afternoon. Fisheries Minister S. Sarma said in an official release that sea level could rise. So, fishermen should not venture out into the sea and those living on the coast should keep vigil.

Evacuated

People were evacuated from the Eravipuram coast of Kollam district as waves hit some huts of fishermen. Sea erosion was reported from Eravipuram and Thanni in the district. Official sources said that the situation was not serious. The rough seas might not be related to tsunami. There were no reports of sea erosion from other parts of the State. Officials told The Hindu at 5.30 p.m. that the tsunami warning was yet to be withdrawn in the State.
