Tribes’ move to occupy estate foiled

May 14, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 07:49 am IST - PATHANAMTHITTA:

The Adivasi Munnetta Samiti of Arippa made a futile attempt to occupy a portion of the AVT rubber plantation at Maniyar early on Friday.

According to reports, around 300 landless people reached Maniyar around 1 a.m. The police reportedly informed the estate manager about the mass movement of the people towards the plantation.

The estate workers and the police jointly chased away all the samiti workers from the estate by 5 a.m.

Meanwhile, a statement issued by the samiti alleged that the private estate group had been illegally occupying the government land and the landless tribal people were trying to occupy the land as the government had failed to provide them land and shelter. The samiti said there were no land documents for 260 acres of the 1,100 acres in the possession of the private company. A commission appointed by the government had found that the title deeds with the company for 455.81 acres of land in its possession were fake, the samiti alleged.

Manager’s version

The company manager said the company has got valid documents for the entire land.
