Trekking to the Ambukuthy Hills has been banned by the State government with effect from 1 October, Director of the State Archaeology department said in a press release here on Tuesday .The Edakkal caves on Ambukuthy hills near Ambalavayal are famous for its Neolithic age petroglyphs (rock engravings) on the walls of the cave.

The ban was imposed owing to the trekking of tourists to the hills posing a threat to the Edakkal caves and the petroglyphs on the walls of the cave, the Director added.
