The District Road Safety Authority will set up a Traffic Park to impart scientific training on traffic rules, District Collector S. Harikishore has said.

The Collector made the announcement at the inaugural of a district-level vehicular traffic awareness campaign here on Wednesday.

He said the Motor Vehicles Department was taking all efforts to prevent road accidents and ensure road safety.

The Collector said the Safe Zone project launched by the department on the main trunk roads leading to Sabarimala during the annual Sabarimala pilgrim season had been a big success in the past three years. The project had considerably reduced road accidents during the pilgrim season, he said.

He said the Motor Vehicles Department had inspected as many as 650 school buses to ensure the safety of schoolchildren.

Superintendent of Police T. Narayanan flagged off a vehicular campaign on the occasion. Mr. Narayanan said instead of punitive measures, the need of the hour was to create proper public awareness of traffic rules in a people-friendly manner.

He said the police had intensified action against drunk driving and violation of traffic rules.

Presiding over the function, Regional Transport Officer Aby John said the department had given top priority to safety of schoolchildren.

V. Ajikumar and R.Vinodkumar, Motor Vehicle Inspectors, spoke.

A mobile exhibition of pictures and models relating to road safety has been arranged inside a specially modified vehicle for public awareness campaigns.
