The nation-wide 24-hour strike called by major Central trade unions, barring BMS, is total in Kerala.
The strike has hit the functioning of educational institutions, banks, government offices, industrial and commercial establishments, including software technology parks, and hit road traffic across the State.
Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has suspended its services. Taxis, lorries, public and private carriages were off the roads.
Isolated incidents of violence and attacks on those who reported for work have been reported from some parts of the State. Attendance in government offices was thin. The Kerala Public Service Commission has cancelled all the written tests scheduled for Wednesday.
Addressing a rally by the striking workers before the State secretariat in Thiruvananthapuram, INTUC State president R. Chandrasekharan and CITU State general secretary Anathalavattom Anandan came down heavily on the Narendra Modi government for heaping largesse on the corporate sector.
