Two tourists were killed in a freak boat mishap at Kodanthuruth near Cherthala here on Monday.

According to the police, the two, Shambu Paul, 52, of Bangalore, and Sunil Sharma, 42, of New Delhi, had arrived at the Pride Emerald island resort here for an annual meeting of the Action Aid International organization. The two, along with two others, set out for a speed boat trip just before the meeting was scheduled to begin.

Police said the boat could have hit something and swerved abruptly, throwing all four passengers into the water. While two of them, Rahul Bhattacharya and Shiju, managed to cling onto the boat, the other two were drowned. Police and Fire and Rescue personnel traced and found the bodies more than an hour after the accident.

The bodies have been shifted to the Thuravur Government Hospital, from where they are likely to be taken the Alappuzha Medical College morgue later in the night, police said.
