The United Democratic Front government has given prime importance to the education sector, especially higher education, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has said.

The Chief Minister was inaugurating the newly sanctioned Government Arts and Science College at Elanthoor near Pathanamthitta on Monday. Mr. Chandy said the government had taken a policy decision to ensure at least one government college or aided college in all the 140 Assembly segments in the State.

Since Pathanamthitta did not have a government college, the government cleared the local MLA’s plea for a Government Arts and Science College at Elanthoor, he said.

Mr. Chandy said 22 Assembly segments in the State did not have a government college and the Government has sanctioned a college each in 18 constituencies this year. Fifteen of them had already started functioning.

The Chief Minister said the State had a Technical University, Malayalam University, Higher Education Council and the government was planning to do a lot more in the higher education sector. Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha P.J. Kurien inaugurated a public meeting held as part of the inaugural function.

Prof. Kurien said the State government deserved praise for sanctioning such a record number of government colleges, thereby bringing higher education facility to all the 140 Assembly segments in the State.

Education Minister P.K. Abdu Rabb presided the inaugural function. Revenue Minister Adoor Prakash released the college logo and Anto Antony, MP, delivered the keynote address.

The Chief Minister was presented with a memento on the occasion.
