The government has given top priority for providing drinking water to all, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has said.

The Chief Minister was inaugurating the work on the Rs.24.97-crore Ayroor-Kanjeettukara drinking water supply project at an official function held at Ayroor on Friday evening.

Mr Chandy said the government would launch more drinking water supply projects across the State, besides ensuring time-bound commissioning of the ongoing project works.

He said conservation of water sources was the need of the hour, as provision of drinking water had become a grave necessity in different parts of the State.

Presiding over the function, P.J. Joseph, Water Resources Minister, said the government had sanctioned a total of Rs.730 crore on various drinking water supply projects in different parts of the State in the previous financial year. Mr Joseph said a total of 170 check dams had been constructed in different parts of the State, spending Rs.106 crore as part of drought relief work in the previous financial year. Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha, P.J. Kurien, was the guest of honour and Anto Antony, MP, delivered the keynote address. Raju Abraham, MLA, and Saji Chacko, District Panchayat president, also spoke.
