Too good to be true?

Commuters sceptical about air-conditioned bus stop project

The district panchayat has announced an air conditioned bus stop in its budget presented on Tuesday. For the model bus stop near Kakkanad, officials are hoping to approach the State government to possess revenue land near its office.

Not only has the civic body recycled one of its fairly old projects in the budget, but it has also left ordinary commuters wondering about its practicality. That concern is not misplaced as the district panchayat has been talking about the project for over a year now.

“Take a look at the pitiable state of many of our ordinary bus shelters and this proposal for an air-conditioned does not inspire any confidence. Our authorities can’t maintain a normal shed, then how will they such a state-of-the-art facility,” said Dinesh Neelankandan, a resident of Pettah.

Going by the proposals in the budget, it seems the district panchayat has taken a liking for cycles. Perhaps taking a cue from Kochi Metro, the civic body has allocated Rs. 66 lakh to set up tracks for cyclists on selected roads, especially those adjoining schools. The civic body’s love for cycles does not end there as it proposes to provide free cycles to all Scheduled Caste students under the Edu Cycle Project while Scheduled Tribe students will get cycles under the Wheels of Change project.
