Tidal waves that have been lashing the coastal areas of Alappuzha district for the past two days have created apprehension among the residents. Several areas, including Arattupuzha, Purakkad and Thuravoor, were affected in the high tides.

In Thrissur, huge tidal waves that lashed the shore created havoc at Chavakkad coast on Saturday morning. Local people said they witnessed the worst sea erosion in the area on the day after the tsunami attack. Sand and sea water lashed the houses in the area. Many houses were damaged. Boats and fishing nets were washed away. Chavakkad, Thiruvathra Puthen Kadppuram, Cheenachuvadu, Nalamkallu, Anchangadi and Kattilappilly were the worst affected areas.

Four families at Chavakkad were rehabilitated. A fishing boat was damaged when it rammed a sea wall at Kodungallur. Nobody was injured.

Traffic affected

In Alappuzha, the tsunami-affected area of Arattupuzha witnessed granite blocks that were arranged along the coastal line falling off onto the roads owing to the pressure of the strong waves on Friday. As a result, traffic along nearly a kilometre of the coastal road was affected.

The residents have been claiming that lack of strong sea walls on the stretch from Valiyazheekal to Madukkal in Thrikunnapuzha has resulted in similar situations occurring on a regular basis. The situation has also resulted in a flood-like situation in such areas, creating inconvenience for the residents.

Similarly, the absence of a sea wall from Ambalappuzha to Karoor has created difficulties for the residents of Purakkad.

Nearly five houses are now facing the threat of being damaged due to the strong waves. The northern areas of the district, including Thuravoor, Pattanakkad and Kuttiathode, have also come under the threat of the tidal waves.

Numerous houses along the coastal region have been flooded with residents shifting to safer locations. Revenue officials have visited the areas and have taken stock of the situation.
