A 23-year-old woman who was allegedly raped after being pushed out of the Ernakulam-Shoranur passenger train on Tuesday died of head injuries she sustained during the incident, at the Thrissur Government Medical College Hospital on Sunday afternoon.

The victim was hospitalised after she was found lying in a pool of blood near the Vallathol Nagar railway station on Tuesday night.

“There had been slight improvement in her condition since Friday following a surgery to remove blood clots from her brain, but it worsened on Sunday morning and she developed secondary complications. She was admitted with severe head injuries,” said Biju Krishnan, who led a team of neurosurgeons who operated on the woman. She was declared dead at 3 p.m.

Kerala Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran told journalists that the body would be handed over to relatives after a post-mortem on Monday.

“Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has been apprised of the developments. A Cabinet meeting on Wednesday will discuss the possible sanction of financial assistance for the family of the victim,” Mr. Rajendran said.

Govinda Swamy (33), hailing from Virudhachalam in Tamil Nadu, has been arrested as part of the investigation.
